Poligon Education Fund Denounces Passage of Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

H.R. 1 Will Harm Most Americans

Washington, D.C. – Poligon Education Fund denounces the passage of H.R. 1, The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, by both houses of Congress today.

The bill is expected to increase the federal deficit by at least $1.5 trillion over the next ten years, paving the way for possible future cuts to critical programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and welfare assistance. The bill also repeals the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act, which would likely increase health insurance premiums by at least 10 percent annually and lead to millions more Americans being uninsured. Americans making $75,000 or less – including 70 percent of Muslim Americans – could also see their taxes increase by 2027.

Poligon Acting Executive Director Afif Rahman issued the following statement:

“Many faith traditions, including Islam, call on us to protect and help the most vulnerable in our society. This bill goes against these common values and instead gives the wealthy and corporations massive tax cuts that are ultimately paid for by low- and middle-income Americans. The overwhelming majority of Americans have consistently voiced that this plan does not benefit them and instead benefits a wealthy minority at their expense. Passing this bill sends a signal to the public that members of Congress have ignored their voices in favor of narrow special interests.”

Poligon believes that the strength of our nation and our economy is defined by the safety, security, welfare, and opportunities afforded to those who are the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in society. Access to quality education and healthcare, economic opportunity, and financial stability form an essential foundation for a stronger, inclusive, and equitable country. This tax bill threatens this foundation and the lives of millions of Americans, and it is a stain on our history as a nation. Poligon will continue to urge Congress to protect and advance policies and programs that preserve and expand fair pathways to success for all Americans.

Poligon Education Fund is a non profit, non-partisan organization working to strengthen Muslim American engagement with Congress through research and education on issues of concern to the community and its allies. Learn more at www.poligonnational.org.###

Last Chance to Stop the Destructive Tax Reform Plan!

Tell your Members of Congress to Oppose H.R. 1

After passing both houses of Congress, H.R.1 (the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act) begins the conference committee process on Wednesday before heading for a FINAL Congressional vote NEXT WEEK. This tax bill will cause enormous harm to most Americans over the coming years. We don’t have a lot of time to stop this destructive bill – Congressional leaders want it on President Trump’s desk as soon as possible.
This tax bill is fundamentally flawed beyond repair – in three big ways:

Closing out 2017 strong

Salaam, and welcome to our December newsletter! See below for what we were up to this month and our upcoming events:

Beyond the Muslim Ban Briefing
We attended a panel discussion of immigration and civil rights activists on the effects of President Trump’s third Muslim travel ban, and how measures such as extreme vetting and the revocation of certain visa programs could further limit the number of Muslims entering the United States. In opening remarks, Rep. Chu (D-CA-27) called on advocates to continue opposing the ban and encourage their members of Congress to do the same.

Poligon also attended a discussion hosted by the Brennan Center on the Trump Administration’s proposed “extreme vetting” of immigrants and visitors to the United States. Panelists highlighted the pitfalls of trying to scan social media data to determine terrorism risks and warned of its potential effects on freedom of speech.

No Muslim Ban Ever Rally
Source: Darakshan Raja

We joined a rally of Muslims and allies gathered in front of the Supreme Court to protest its decision to let Muslim Ban 3.0 go into effect, and renew their support for families who will be affected by the ban. Rep. Chu (D-CA-27) and Rep. Kildee (D-MI-5) also called for the country’s leaders to live up to its ideals of tolerance and diversity.

Rally Against the GOP Tax Plan
On the day the conference committee on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act met, we attended a rally of members of Congress and advocates to oppose the plan and call for the final vote on the bill to be postponed until Senator-Elect Doug Jones (D-AL) is sworn in.

Protect Patients Day of Action
Poligon attended a rally of medical professionals and activists at the Capitol against provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that would reduce access to healthcare. Afterward participants visited Congressional offices to share their stories of how the bill would negatively impact them.

House Democrats Press Conference
Poligon attended a press conference on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act hosted by Minority Leader Pelosi (D-CA-12), featuring faith leaders and Americans who rely on programs that could experience funding reductions as a result of the bill.
