Advocacy on the Hill
Poligon visited Capitol Hill with other advocates to meet with Members of the House Representatives who have not yet signed on to support the NO BAN Act, which will repeal the Muslim Ban. The House announced the bill will be voted on the week of March 9th. Help Poligon continue to keep up the pressure in Congress by making a zakat eligible and tax-deductible donation today. Your contribution will help keep our momentum going to repeal the ban.

House Judiciary Subcommittee Hearing About Citizens United
The Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties held a public hearing for The Democracy for All Amendment, H.J. Res. 2. This proposed constitutional amendment would overturn Supreme Court cases like Citizens United v. FEC and get big money out of politics. Poligon and other advocates packed the room to show support for overturning the ruling.  Watch the full hearing here.

Vigil of Mustafa Ayoubi, Meeting Rashida Tlaib, and More…

Salaam, and welcome to our February 2019 newsletter! Here’s what we were up to last month:

Black History Month 2019
This month we recognized Black Muslims who have made an impact in their community and in Congress. Go to our FacebookTwitter, or Instagram to check out who we highlighted each week!

Emgage USA Congressional Reception
Poligon attended Emgage USA’s reception held at the National Press Club in D.C. where both Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13) & Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL-26) discussed their goals and experiences in Congress. Congresswoman Tlaib talked about being unapologetically herself, while Rep. Mucarsel-Powell spoke about her promises to address the detainment of children and help repeal the Muslim Ban.
The Vigil of Mustafa Ayoubi with Representative Carson
Poligon attended the vigil for Mustafa Ayoubi, a Muslim killed in an alleged hate crime including Ayoubi’s family, in front of the Supreme Court. Congressman André Carson (D-IN-7) and some faith leaders were also in attendance to speak upon Ayoubi’s behalf and condemned the horrendous incident that occurred. Indiana is one of just five states that does not have a hate crime law. We will be following this case closely, so stay tuned to our mailing list and social media on opportunities to take action!
Meeting with Senator Lamar Alexander
Poligon’s legislative fellow, Ruwa Romman, had the opportunity to meet with Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN-3) with members of the Domestic Human Needs (DHN) working group to discuss funding of housing vouchers that would help the poverty issue that still remains a prevalent issue in the U.S., particularly for communities of color.
Press Conference with Democratic Members of Congress
Poligon attended a press conference where the Democratic Members of Congress gathered around a sign stating to “Terminate Trump’s Fake Emergency.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-12) and Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX-20) introduced a privileged resolution to stop Trump’s emergency declaration for a border wall. #NoBanWall
