Tell Congress: Pass the NO BAN Act

Picture

Throughout American history, immigration policies have been used to target Jews, Catholics, Mormons and Muslims, among others. With the NO BAN Act in Congress, we have a real chance at ending religious discrimination in immigration laws.

We join over 100 Muslim and immigrants’ rights organizations in applauding the reintroduction of the NO BAN Act, in the House of Representatives on Thursday, February 25. Poligon proudly advocated for and endorsed Rep. Judy Chu’s (D-CA-27) introduction of the bill in 2019 and again in the 117th Congress. The bill is co-sponsored by 137 House Representatives, championed in the Senate by Senator Chris Coons (D-DE), and is included in President Biden’s U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021. Read Poligon’s full statement here.
We will never forget the countless American families ripped apart by the #MuslimBan and #AfricanBan — we must ensure this discriminatory policy never happens again. Your letter can make a difference.
Tell your Representative to co-sponsor and vote yes on the NO BAN Act today!

The NO BAN Act will:

  • Prevent any president from banning people because of their faith or national origin.
  • Impose limitations on executive authority to suspend or restrict immigrants from entering the U.S.
  • Prohibit religious discrimination in immigration laws, specifically those without statutory basis.

Here’s a sample call script to get you started:
Hello, my name is ______ and I’m a constituent of Representative _____. I’m calling to ask you to vote to pass the NO BAN Act. Banning individuals on the basis of religion and ethnicity does not represent American values and it violates our Constitution. I urge Representative _____ to vote “YES” on supporting the No Ban Act. Will the Representative do so?

It’s Finally Time to Pass the #NOBANAct!

It’s been over a year since the House introduced the NO BAN Act (H.R. 2486, previously H.R. 2214), which would repeal the Muslim Ban. Due to Coronavirus, the House of Representatives delayed a vote on the legislation the week of March 9th. Finally, the House will be voting on the bill on July 22nd. Poligon has worked tirelessly with our partners to support the introduction and progression of the bill in the House and Senate.

Urge Congress to Pass the NO BAN Act

Today, June 26th, is the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Muslim Ban 3.0. As a result, family members living abroad have been unable to reunite with their loved ones in the U.S. because of their religion and ethnicity. While there have been several iterations of the ban, Muslim Ban 3.0 targets individuals from Muslim majority countries including Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen and offers a sham waiver process, denying 98% of applicants. Congress must pass the NO BAN Act and #RepealTheBan!

Call Congress to Pass the Justice in Policing Act

For weeks now, racial justice protests opposing police brutality have occurred across the country. Congress must take action. These acts of violence are inexcusable as are the discrimination and institutional racism that have targeted Black people since even before the inception of this nation.

On Thursday, the House will be voting on H.R.7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, to hold law enforcement officials accountable for their actions. The bill bans chokeholds and “no-knock” warrants, ends racial and religious profiling, eliminates “qualified immunity” for police officers, collects data on police misconduct and use-of-force, limits transfer of military equipment to law enforcement departments, requires body-worn cameras, and classifies lynching as a hate crime.

We urge Senators to support the Senate version of the Justice in Policing Act, S.3912.

Although this bill will not resolve all of our country’s problems with policing, it is a vital first step. And we need your help to make sure it passes.

We need your voice: Tell Congress to hold law enforcement officials accountable for their actions and implement policies to end these injustices.

Check if your Representative co-sponsored the bill or if your Senator has co-sponsored the Senate version of the bill. Call your Representative and Senator if they have not co-sponsored the bill (call 202-224-3121).

Sample Call Script:

ACTION ALERT: Call Congress to Condemn Police Brutality and End These Injustices

Picture

With recent incidents of police brutality against George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbury, we call on Congress to take action. These acts of violence by law enforcement officials are inexcusable as are the discrimination, institutional racism, and abuses of power that have targeted Black people across the nation for far too long.

We urge Congress to act now and pass H.R. 4408, the Eric Garner Excessive Use of Force Prevention Act, to prohibit police chokeholds and other harmful tactics that result in asphyxiation. Additionally, we urge Congress to pass and support the House Resolution introduced by Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA-7), which condemns police brutality, racial profiling, and the excessive use of force.

We need your voice: Tell Congress to condemn all acts of police brutality and implement policies to end these injustices.

End Trump’s Muslim Ban & Pass The #NOBANAct

TAKE ACTION:
It’s been almost a year since the House introduced the NO BAN Act (H.R. 2214), which would repeal the Muslim Ban. Finally, the House of Representatives announced there will be a vote on the bill the week of March 9th. Poligon has worked tirelessly with partners in the NO BAN Act coalition to support the introduction of the bill in the House and Senate.

On February 21, 2020, the expanded Muslim Ban went into effect, which includes six additional countries, bringing the total to 13 banned countries. The Muslim Ban continues to separate tens of thousands of American families and violates our country’s constitution of religious freedom and equal rights under the law. Congress must pass the NO BAN Act and #RepealTheBan!

Condemn Trump’s Anti-Muslim Tweet

President Trump recently retweeted an Islamophobic post which portrayed leaders of the Democratic party in traditionally Islamic garb. The White House defended the President’s action by stating the image depicts that Democrats are on the side of terrorists. This message is harmful and dangerous for Muslim communities, as it promotes Islamophobia and an environment where physically and verbally attacking Muslims is acceptable.

A few Members of Congress have spoken out but not nearly enough, setting the precedent that this sort of rhetoric is acceptable from the President and other elected officials. It’s not.

We need your voice: Tell Congress to speak out against the use of anti-Muslim hatred in political discourse!

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW:
Call your Representative and Two Senators (call 202-224-3121) now and urge them to speak out against this bigoted rhetoric.

Sample Calling Script:
Hello, my name is ______ and I’m a constituent of Senator/Representative _____. I’m calling to ask you to oppose the use of Islamophobic rhetoric or any sort of religious bigotry in political discourse. The President recently displayed on Twitter an Islamophobic image, seen by millions of his followers. This action must not be tolerated as it harms the Muslim and faith community, setting the precedent that this anti-Muslim rhetoric is acceptable. I urge Senator/Representative _____ to speak against these actions. Will the Senator/Representative do so?

Say NO To Mike Pompeo

Take Action!

This is CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

He has been nominated to be US Secretary of State.

We CANNOT let that happen.

Call your two SENATORS NOW to OPPOSE Pompeo’s nomination.

What’s going on?
Tomorrow, on April 12th, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will hold a confirmation hearing for Mike Pompeo, the nominee for US Secretary of State, the chief adviser to the President on foreign affairs.
Who is Mike Pompeo?
Mike Pompeo is the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and a former member of Congress representing the 4th District of Kansas.

What is Pompeo’s attitude toward Islam and Muslims?
Pompeo in a speech to his constituents in Wichita, KS in 2014:

“The threat to America is from people who deeply believe that Islam is the wayand the light and the only answer. [Muslims] abhor Christians and will continue to press against us.”

Pompeo calling Muslim Americans “complicit” to acts of terrorism after the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013:

“Instead of responding [to terrorist attacks], silence has made these Islamic leaders across America potentially complicit in these acts, and more importantly still, in those that may well follow…It casts doubt upon the commitment to peace by adherents to the Muslim faith.”

Pompeo maintains very strong relationships with anti-Muslim extremists and hate groups including Brigitte Gabriel of ACT for America and Frank Gaffney, Jr. of the Center for Security Policy

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

Call your TWO SENATORS today and urge them to OPPOSE Pompeo’s Nomination!

Sample Calling Script:
Hello, my name is _________ and I’m a constituent of Senator ________. I’m calling because I oppose the nomination of Mike Pompeo for US Secretary of State. Pompeo’s recorded history of anti-Muslim sentiments and statements, including blatantly calling Muslim Americans ‘a threat to America’ and ‘complicit’ to acts of terrorism, is beyond disturbing and extremely unfitting for any public office, let alone a position responsible for promoting global peace and stability and cultivating relationships with diverse leaders and nations. Pompeo also has strong, open relationships with documented anti-Muslim extremists and hate groups responsible for propagating alternative facts and misinformation and breeding division. I urge the Senator to oppose Mike Pompeo’s nomination for US Secretary of State. Will the Senator oppose Pompeo’s nomination for US Secretary of State?

Tell Congress: Muslims, Refugees, and Dreamers Are Welcome Here

It has been almost a year since President Trump issued his first executive order to restrict the entry of Muslims into the United States. Although all versions of the ban have been ruled to be discriminatory by multiple courts, Muslim Ban 3.0 is currently in effect and is causing heartbreak for American families and their relatives abroad.

The Trump administration has also cracked down on refugee admissions by instituting more burdensome screening requirements, lowering the United States’ annual refugee cap to 45,000, and proposing more limits on family reunification.

Meanwhile, Congress and the White House continue to stall on a solution for the 800,000 Dreamers who have lived in the United States since they were children after President Trump chose to discontinue DACA protections. Over 120 DACA recipients lose their status every day, and this number is expected to skyrocket after March 5th.

It’s up to you to help Congress uphold American values of pluralism and equal rights for all – and there are many ways you can take action!

Will Senator/Representative ___________ stand up for American values and oppose policies that discriminate against people based on their religious and ethnic background?

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent of Senator/Representative ___________. Call your reps NOW to oppose amendment targeting Islamic Relief

Call your representatives to oppose DeSantis amendment
Today, the House of Representatives will be voting on the DeSantis Amendment (115-31) to make it illegal to give funds to Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW), a humanitarian organization dedicated to the alleviation of poverty and suffering. This is Congress’s latest attempt to shut down Muslim advocacy, charity, and humanitarian organizations by claiming they are affiliated with terrorists.

What You Can Do Now

Call Congress Today: Call your Representatives at (202) 224-3121 NOW (the vote is scheduled for this afternoon).

Sample Script:“I strongly oppose and urge you to vote against Rep. DeSantis’s amendment #115 for the State & Foreign Operations Appropriations in H.R. 3354. Islamic Relief is a humanitarian organization that has been subjected to over 500 audits, none of which have found evidence to support Mr. DeSantis’s allegations. In fact, its US branch has been doing amazing work with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. This is simply Congress’s latest attempt to shut down Muslim civil rights, humanitarian and advocacy organizations under the guise of terrorism, and I request you vote against it.”
