Urge your Representative to Provide Support to the Postal Service

The recent Administration attacks on the U.S. Postal Service threaten the integrity of this year’s election, by implementing harmful operational changes and blocking emergency funding. The U.S. Postal Service is essential to the functioning of our democracy. Congress must pass legislation to protect the services of USPS.

The House will vote this Saturday on the Delivering for America Act, which prohibits the USPS from implementing any changes to operations it had in place on January 1, 2020 and includes a $25 billion in funding for the Postal Service. Additionally, the bill would prevent the USPS from implementing any changes to level of service, closure or consolidation of any post office or reduction in hours, and would allow for overtime.

Although Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced halting further operational changes at the U.S. Postal Service until after the election, he offered no commitment to undo the harmful effects of previous actions. Raising the costs on mailing ballots and slowing down mail service will harm voters’ ability to safely engage in this year’s election during the pandemic. Delivering mail-in ballots is an essential function of the post office and is a safe and secure method of voting. Congress must act now to protect the Postal Service.

We need your voice: Tell your Representative to provide support to the Postal Service.

Urge the Senate to Provide Relief to Communities Impacted by COVID-19

Picture

Negotiations between Congress and the White House for a fifth COVID-19 relief package failed to reach a compromise. Despite, the United States having surpassed over 160,000 deaths due to COVID-19 and a tremendous economic impact on vulnerable communities.

Right now, the Senate is in recess until September 7th. The Senate must immediately pass the COVID-19 relief package and ensure families are protected amidst this pandemic. We urge the Senate to secure these provisions approved by the House in its HEROES Act are included in the next COVID-19 relief package:

Ensure access to food:

  • Increase SNAP’s maximum benefit by 15 percent from June 1, 2020, through September 30, 2021
  • An increase for all SNAP households averaging about $25 per person per month
  • Raise the minimum SNAP benefit from $15 per month to $30.

Ensure immigrant-inclusion:

  • Access to free COVID-19 testing and treatment by uninsured people, regardless of their immigration status.
  • Immigrant taxpayers receive stimulus checks from previous relief bills.
  • An extension of work permits and protection from deportation for immigrants

Ensure safe voting access:

  • Allocate $3.6 billion for protective equipment and supplies needed to manage the 2020 elections, and protect voters’ and poll workers’ health.

We need your voice: Tell the Senate to provide relief to families impacted by COVID-19.

The United States has surpassed over 100,000 deaths due to COVID-19 and the poverty rate is expected to rise dramatically to 13.3% of Americans unemployed. While the House passed the H.R.6800, the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions (HEROES) Act, a bill that would address many challenges faced by families and vulnerable communities, consideration for a next stimulus package has been stalled in the Senate. We urge the Senate to ensure these provisions approved by the House in its HEROES Act are included in the next COVID-19 relief package before the July 4 recess:
Ensure access to food:

  • Increase SNAP’s maximum benefit by 15 percent from June 1, 2020, through September 30, 2021

Action Alert: Call Congress To Suspend School Meal Debt During COVID-19

Picture

Many families are facing economic hardships due to the impacts of COVID-19 and should not have the added stress of paying off their child’s school lunch debt. Representatives Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5) and Deb Haaland (D-NM-1) recently introduced H.R. 6430, the Suspend School Meal Debt Act. This bill will suspend collection of all student meal debt during the COVID-19 pandemic.

School meal debt results in students going hungry, experiencing lunch shaming, and financial pressure on their families. This bill would suspend any late fees associated with unpaid meals, cancel the meal debt for families, and require the Department of Agriculture to reimburse each school food authority and local educational agency. Families deserve support during this time, and this bill will provide much-needed economic relief.

We urge members of Congress to co-sponsor the Suspend School Meal Debt Act and to include it in the next stimulus package.

We need your voice: Tell Congress to support suspending school meal debt during COVID-19!

Tell Congress NO to Starving the Hungry! #MuslimsAgainstHunger

Congress tried to cut $20 Billion from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in the Farm Bill.

SNAP provides effective food assistance to 42 Million Americans and more than 10 times what all U.S. food banks combined can provide.

Poligon, ISNA, and our partners fought back on these proposed cuts. The bill FAILED.
But, Republicans in Congress want a REVOTE

We CANNOT support a #FarmBill that cuts funding for SNAP and intentionally hurts low-income families, workers, women, children, and seniors

Call your Representative and Senators to protect funding for SNAP!

#MuslimsAgainstHunger #SNAPworks #HandsOffSNAP

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

Call your Representative and Two Senators (call 202-224-3121) now and urge them to OPPOSE cuts to SNAP!

Check how your Representative in the House voted on the Farm Bill the first time.
Sample Calling Script:
Hello, my name is _________ and I’m a constituent of Senator/Representative ________. I’m calling because I oppose any version of the Farm Bill that makes drastic cuts to SNAP. SNAP is an extremely effective program combatting hunger and poverty by serving over 42 million Americans and lifting 8 million people out of poverty yearly. Imposing harsher work requirements than those that already exist will hurt workforce participation and punish hardworking, low-income workers and families with children who already struggle to put food on the table. People should not have to choose between working and staying alive. I urge Senator/Representative ___________ to work across the aisle and draft a Farm Bill that protects funding for SNAP and to oppose any proposal that does not do so. Will the Senator/Representative do so?

Use Social Media:
Let your members of Congress and your social networks know what you think of this bill. Here are some sample tweets and images:

  • More than $8 in $10 in nutrition assistance go to households that include a child, a senior, or person with a disability. Yet these are some of the people hit hardest by the House GOP Farm Bill. #HandsOffSNAP #MuslimsAgainstHunger
  • The House will try to vote again on a bill that would take food assistance away from 2 million people. Call your Member of Congress and tell them to vote NO on a House Farm Bill that slashes funding for SNAP! (202) 224- 3121#MuslimsAgainstHunger #HandsOffSNAP
  • 53% of all SNAP households with children are headed by single mothers. Congress should protect #SNAP and not punish single parents and children. #HandsOffSNAP #MuslimsAgainstHunger

While fasting, Poligon and ISNA are on Capitol Hill today with our partners meeting with Senators and Representatives to protect access to food assistance and live out our values as Muslim Americans.

Stop the Destructive Senate Tax Bill!

Tell your Senators to Oppose H.R. 1

The Senate is voting this week on a tax bill that will cause enormous harm to most Americans. We don’t have a lot of time to stop this massive bill – Congressional leaders want it on President Trump’s desk as soon as possible.

This tax bill is fundamentally flawed beyond repair – in three big ways:

  • It is regressive, giving giant tax cuts to large corporations and the wealthiest households while raising taxes on everyone else. By the time it is fully enacted, all households earning less than $75,000 will see a tax increase. Those with incomes between $20,000 and $30,000 will face a tax hike of 25 percent! At least 70% of American Muslims could see their taxes increase under this plan.
  • It is irresponsible, growing deficits by at least $1.5 trillion over the next decade. This will put enormous pressure on Congress to cut essential programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid, housing assistance, college financial aid, and more. The plan could also immediately undermine tax breaks for state and local taxescharitable donations, and interest payments on student loans.
  • It threatens health coverage for millions. By repealing the individual mandate to have health insurance, Congressional leaders get hundreds of billions in savings to pay for corporate tax cuts. But as a result, 13 million people will become uninsured and millions of people will see significant premium increases.

Hi, my name is _______ and I’m a constituent of Senator ___________. I’m calling to express my opposition to the tax reform plan being voted on this week, H.R. 1. [Short personal anecdote about how your taxes would be negatively impacted, if applicable]. According to the Congressional Budget Office, this plan will raise taxes on many Americans to pay for tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy. This is unacceptable. Will Senator ___________ oppose this legislation?
