American Muslim Health Professionals’ 15th Anniversary Gala​
Poligon was honored to be joining AMHP for their milestone celebration. The Gala’s theme focused on strengthening the impact of Muslim health professionals to improve the health and wellness of all Americans. We were proud to collaborate with them on their advocacy toolkit.

Impeachment Guide​
The House voted to impeach President Trump, making him the third U.S. President to be impeached. The first article: abuse of power, was passed with 230-197 votes and the second article: obstruction of Congress, was passed with a vote of 229-198. Click here to view our step-by-step guide to understanding the impeachment process.

Action Alerts
Congress is on Recess from Friday, December 20th until Sunday, January 5th. Poligon sent an action alert for winter recess when Members will be in their home districts.

Poligon Partners with ISPU on Annual American Muslim Poll
Poligon partnered with ISPU on their Annual American Muslim Poll. In that poll, it was shown that only 17% of Muslims contacted their Member of Congress in the last year. This ranked Muslims as the least politically engaged faith group. Poligon wants to increase that percentage so that every Muslim is politically engaged. You can help us achieve this goal by donating today.

Annual D.C. Iftar hosted by Poligon
Poligon hosted its annual iftar in D.C.
 this Ramadan with nearly 100 people in attendance. The night was filled with an evening of fellowship, delicious food, and one of the best views in the District. We even had a longtime supporter and community leader, Colin Christopher, express a few words of support for our work. You can watch his full speech here.

Maryland Iftar hosted by Sadaf & Mike
Sadaf Ahmad and Mike Ryan hosted an iftar
 to raise funds for Poligon at their home in Maryland. Poligon Board Members, Wardah Khalid and Faheem Rathore, attended and gave a presentation about the organization. Thank you to Sadaf and Mike for opening your home to us and for being proud supporters.

Poligon attended an iftar on the Capitol Hill
 that was hosted by Muslim Advocates and co-hosted by Muslim Members of Congress Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13), Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5), and Andre Carson (D-IN-7). The Representatives spoke about standing together and fighting for each other’s rights.

Happy Ramadan!

Poligon wishes you a Happy Ramadan! Through our trainings, research, and education, Poligon continues to amplify Muslim American voices in Congress. This month invest in Poligon so that we can represent our community!
No Ban Act 

Poligon along with 384 orgs, formed a coalition to support the No Ban Act which was introduced by Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA-27). The bills, S.1123 and H.R.2214, introduced in the Senate and House respectively, aim to end the Muslim Ban and ensure that no future discriminatory policies like it can be enacted in the future. Read our full letter here and don’t forget to sign our petitionlink to support the No Ban Act!
Muslim Hill Day

Poligon joined more than 500 delegates from 25 states to meet with elected officials and congressional staffers during the US Council of Muslim Organizations’ (USCMO) fifth annual “National Muslim Advocacy Day.” Our legislative fellow, Ruwa Romman, was able to meet with Rep. Rob Woodall (R-GA-7) to discuss a host of issues, like the No Ban Act.

Action Alerts

Poligon sent out an action Alert about Senator Chris Coons and Representative Judy Chu introducing the NO BAN Act, a historic civil rights bill that would end the Muslim Ban and prevent faith-based discrimination in immigration, in the Senate and the House respectively. Urge your member of Congress to support this bill!

Poligon also sent out a newsletter about how Congress adjourned Friday, April 12 for their April recess up until Sunday, April 28. Congressional recesses are a great opportunity to directly tell your congressmen about the issues that are most important to you! Even though the recess is now over, you should schedule your visits today or call them!

Poligon invites you to our annual iftaar in DC! Join us for an evening of fellowship, delicious food, and one of the best views in the District. We’ll share updates on our mission to amplify Muslim and ally voices in Congress and how you can get engaged as we approach another critical election year. We have invited some special guest speakers so stay tuned for updates! Space is limited (tickets sold out last year) so reserve your spot now! Unfortunately, we will NOT be selling tickets at the door.

The New Zealand Shooting 
The entire Poligon team still mourns the loss of those affected by the tragic shootings that occurred in New Zealand. To support the victims and their families, we have partnered up with LaunchGood to help the Muslim community recover. Please help in supporting the United for Christchurch Mosque by donating here.
Press Conference to Stand with Ilhan
Poligon participated in a coalition that delivered a letter to Nancy Pelosi’s office that urged house leaders to include all forms of bigotry and hate in their resolution to condemn anti-Semitism as hateful expressions of intolerance. The original resolution was meant to punish Rep. Omar for her comments about Israel.
For the People Act Facebook Live
Poligon  Legislative Fellow, Ruwa Romman, held a Facebook Live discussing the For the People Act and what a motion to recommit in the House means. Watch here to find out more!
Women’s History Month & Muslim Women’s Day
Poligon participated in Women’s History Month by creating a campaign highlighting Muslim women who have been making a difference. Poligon also took part in Muslim Women’s Day on March 27th, as part of an initiative from Muslim Girl, to celebrate Muslim women and their contributions. El-Hibri Foundation Training 
Poligon President, Wardah Khalid, spent a weekend with American Muslim leaders at an Executive Nonprofit Management Training by the El-Hibri Foundation. We are looking forward to implementing what we learned!

February Newsletter

Salaam, and welcome to our February 2020 newsletter! Here’s what we were up to this month:

Advocacy on the Hill
Poligon visited Capitol Hill with other advocates to meet with Members of the House Representatives who have not yet signed on to support the NO BAN Act, which will repeal the Muslim Ban. The House announced the bill will be voted on the week of March 9th. Help Poligon continue to keep up the pressure in Congress by making a zakat eligible and tax-deductible donation today. Your contribution will help keep our momentum going to repeal the ban.

House Judiciary Subcommittee Hearing About Citizens United
The Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties held a public hearing for The Democracy for All Amendment, H.J. Res. 2. This proposed constitutional amendment would overturn Supreme Court cases like Citizens United v. FEC and get big money out of politics. Poligon and other advocates packed the room to show support for overturning the ruling.  Watch the full hearing here.

Emgage USA Congressional Reception
Poligon attended Emgage USA’s reception held at the National Press Club in D.C. where both Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13) & Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D-FL-26) discussed their goals and experiences in Congress. Congresswoman Tlaib talked about being unapologetically herself, while Rep. Mucarsel-Powell spoke about her promises to address the detainment of children and help repeal the Muslim Ban. 
The Vigil of Mustafa Ayoubi with Representative Carson
Poligon attended the vigil for Mustafa Ayoubi, a Muslim killed in an alleged hate crime including Ayoubi’s family, in front of the Supreme Court. Congressman André Carson (D-IN-7) and some faith leaders were also in attendance to speak upon Ayoubi’s behalf and condemned the horrendous incident that occurred. Indiana is one of just five states that does not have a hate crime law. We will be following this case closely, so stay tuned to our mailing list and social media on opportunities to take action!
Meeting with Senator Lamar Alexander 
Poligon’s legislative fellow, Ruwa Romman, had the opportunity to meet with Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN-3) with members of the Domestic Human Needs (DHN) working group to discuss funding of housing vouchers that would help the poverty issue that still remains a prevalent issue in the U.S., particularly for communities of color. 
Press Conference with Democratic Members of Congress 
Poligon attended a press conference where the Democratic Members of Congress gathered around a sign stating to “Terminate Trump’s Fake Emergency.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-12) and Congressman Joaquin Castro (D-TX-20) introduced a privileged resolution to stop Trump’s emergency declaration for a border wall. #NoBanWall
Action Alert 
Congress adjourned Friday, February 15 to Sunday, February 24 for their Spring recess. Poligon specifically sent an action alert for spring recess for what you could do during that time. It was a great opportunity to directly tell them about the issues that are most important to you! Even if you couldn’t call or visit them then, you should schedule your visits today! Click here to find out who represents you, how to contact them, and where their in-district offices are located.

Interfaith Vigil: Restoring a Faithful Democracy
Poligon joined the “Faithful Democracy” coalition at a vigil on Capitol Hill lamenting 10 years of the Citizens United ruling. The coalition sheds light on issues of money in politics and good governance. Speakers included Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), Sister Simone Cambell, Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, Rev. Dr. Leslie Copeland-Tune, and Rev. Jennifer Butler. Click here to watch the event.

Poligon Education Fund’s First Hill Halal Happy Hour
Poligon hosted a successful Hill Halal Happy Hour at the Union Station Shake Shack in DC! We had a great time meeting and mingling with Muslims working on and off the Hill. Thank you to everyone who attended.

Salaam, and welcome to our December 2018 newsletter! Here’s what we were up to last month:

Muslim Ban Letter to Congress with 118 Organizations
Poligon, along with 118 national, state, and local organizations sent a letter to Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY) requesting a hearing on Proclamation 9645 also known as the Muslim Ban. Congress has done nothing for almost two years since the policy has been passed.  

Delivering a Petition Against the Muslim Ban to Congress
Poligon joined Muslim advocates and allies on Capitol Hill to deliver a petition signed by 150,000 people, urging members to repeal the Muslim Ban that has ripped families apart. Poligon Founder and President Wardah Khalid had the opportunity to engage with fellow Muslim leaders at year end galas of Muslim Advocates, Islamic Relief USA Gala, ISNA, and Quaker allies at the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL).

Our New Legislative Fellow: 
Ruwa Romman
 graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from Oglethorpe University in 2015, where she served as President of Student Government and COEXIST Oglethorpe. She is passionate about politics, civic engagement, and interfaith dialogue and hopes to empower as many people as possible to become more civically engaged. She has worked as a Field Organizer for the Georgia Muslim Voter Project and served as Communications Director at CAIR Georgia. Ruwa is currently pursuing her Masters in Public Policy from the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University.
Our New Media Intern: 
Isbah Usmani
 is a freshman at the University of Houston majoring in Finance, where she is an active member in the Finance Association and in the Bauer Honors College. She is passionate about helping grow Muslims’ awareness in politics and hopes to expand Poligon’s social media outreach.
