Since 9/11, the civil rights of American Muslims have been under constant threat as a result of discriminatory programs, hate crimes, and legislation launched in the name of national security. The programs and legislation include the government watch lists, USA Patriot Act, USA Freedom Act, Discriminatory Profiling Act and much more. Click here to learn more about these programs.
These programs, as well as Islamophobic statements by politicians and media, have dangerous consequences for Muslims or people who appear Muslim. Some have been harassed in the street, sent threatening messages to their homes, and even pushed into oncoming subway trains. Many mosques have been vandalized, and at least 55% of Muslim children have been bullied in schools by their peers and teachers alike. That is twice the rate of their non-Muslim peers.
We urge American Muslims and their allies to push their elected officials to call for an end to unconstitutional, ineffective, and harmful programs that violate the civil rights of Muslims and Arabs and preemptively consider them guilty on account of their faith and ethnicity.
